I decided it was time to do a book blog. Since, you know, we read a lot in our house. A lot. And, because I can, I’m starting with some of our favorite picture books, old and new. (Chapter books to come later).
Duck Duck Dinosaur by Kallie George
This is a fun, quick story about three unusual siblings with the very normal problem of sibling rivalry. My kids laughed through reading after reading, and there are number of other books in this series, including some early reader options.
Rabbit Moon by Jean Kim
A more recent release, this book is a sweet story of a lonely rabbit and how he makes a wish…and some friends. Its rhymes and pictures are lovely, and Timmy asked me to read it over and over again.
Did You Take the B from my _ook? by Beck Stanton
This one is perfect for those just learning their letter sounds to older kids. It’s super fun, though a little challenging to skip the right letters when I read it out loud. It’s the first in a series, and we are definitely going to find the others next.
Bob, Not Bob by Elizabeth Scanlon
Seriously, this is one of the most fun books I have read to my kids in a long time. From the reality of a sick kid to the hilarious stuffy-nose confusion (and yes, you MUST read it like your nose is clogged), we actually laugh more every time we read it.
Dear Vampa by Ross Collins
A unique take on differences, Alex and Timmy really liked this one. The illustrations are striking with one family all in black and white and the other in color. And the new neighbors’ secret is revealed at the end.
Be Quiet by Ryan Higgins
By the author of Father Bruce, this is a giggle-worthy book about one mouse’s quest to write a wordless book (“It’s artistic!”). His friends appear, start talking, and trouble follows. My kids love the humor. I love the references to literature, art, and poetic vocabulary. It’s a great book.
Monster’s New Undies by Samantha Berger
This one is also done in rhyme, and it gets funnier every time we read it. The title is a pretty apt description of the storyline, but the regular references to his bottom kept my kids giggling the entire time. Just a fun one!
7 Ate 9 by Tara Lazar
This one is a cute read full of math puns and number jokes. My kids enjoyed the surprise ending and the humor. I liked the pictures, too.
If Waffles Were Like Boys by Charise Mericle Harper
Timmy loved this book, and we read it repeatedly. The imaginative (and accurate) descriptions of how boys interact with the world around them was both encouraging and fun. The illustrations are great, and my kids all enjoyed the fun.
Talk to me: So that’s it–9 of our favorite picture books. Have you read and enjoyed any of these titles? What books have your kids enjoyed that we might read next?
